A system that merely hopes employers will provide health insurance for employees will, no doubt, lead to fewer and fewer employees covered by insurance and will continue the current system where those who have insurance subsidize the health care of those who do not.
What is needed now is a very basic package of health benefits provided by the Federal, not state, government and paid for by taxes, perhaps a mix of payroll taxeg, sin taxes on both alcohol and tobacco products, income taxes and a small national sales tax.
The basic package should include prenatal care and well baby care. Since the issue is so contentious, it should probably not cover abortion. It should not cover heroic Pleasures to prolong death. It should not cover care of extremely premature underweight infants. It should not ' provide liver transplants for those who have abused alcohol And destroyed the ones they were bom with. * Insurance companies could be offered the opportunity to sell insurance to supplement the basic package, but Companies would get no tax breaks for providing it for employees.
This is a proposal large numbers of American voters could support. There is no discemable support for the hodge podge of proposals being debated in Congress. .* \
