Godwin’s announcement Warner remarked angrily. “If he, as a Republican, could support a Democratic in 1977, I can damn well support a Republican in 1994.” He was referring to Godwin’s endorsement in 1977 of Democratic attorney general nominee Edward Lane over Republican nominee Marshall Coleman.
Meanwhile incumbent Democratic Senator Charles S. Robb, whose seat appears in jeopardy, continues his high risk strategy of linking his fate to that of President; Clinton whose popularity figures' continue to dip.
In a four way race, the Robb goat seems to be to get the votes of mosS of the 35 percent or so of Virginian^ who approve of Clinton’s perfor* mance in office. A candidate who caij get upwards of 30 percent of the vote can be the winner this yej£ even though he polls far short of £ majority of the electorate.
Former Governor Douglas Wilder, who running as an indepens dent Democrat, continues to wagg an aggressive campign. Should he remain in the race until the end, he may well do serious damage ts Robb’s attempt to win reelection, fef more damage than Coleman wiQ probably do to North. ;
