In his letter extolling the virtues of the single-payer plan for health care “reform,” Dr. Young (August ' 17) overlooks two virtues of the current arrangement and the two related drawbacks (to use the mildest work I can think of) of the alternative he offers.
Each of us, he seems to feel, is forced to chose among “a great number of competing private bureaucracies,” about whom he has nothing good to say, although it is my experience that basically all that upsets patients these days is the high price of insurance and of prescriptions. Surely open competition would be a better way to correct this problem than to turn it over to the single benign bureaucracy he envisions, which will be operated, let me remind you, by the people responsible for the efficiency of the Postal Service, the budget of the Pentagon, and the compassion of the Internal Revenue Service.
