The final event of the 1994 Farm Show for youth in Rappahannock’ Culpeper and Madison counties is the Carcass Contest. ' When livestock are sold at the sale at the Farm Show, the animals are sent to the slaughter house, and the carcassers are judged by the meat graders to determine if they wiull be prime, choice, select or standard cuts of meat.
!The awards for the 1994 Carcass Contest were presented on Thursday, August 18 following a picnic supper for 4-H members, leaders, and their families at Graves Mountain Lodge near Syria.
.“The 1994 awards program and picnic had the largest participation in recent years with approximately 125 people in attendance,” according to Randall Updike, chairman of the

Years Old
September 3 marks the 30th Anniversary of the passage of the Wilderness Act. Wilderness is defined in the Act as a place “...where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain.”
In 1976 Congress designated 79,579 acres of Shenandoah National Park as components of the National Wilderness Preservation System.
“Wilderness is a vital part of Shenandoah National Park,” said Superintendent J.W. Wade. “On this anniversary, we’d like to say thank you to the many volunteers who have maintained the trail system in wilderness areas of the Park. We’ve been fortunate to have people who have contributed thousands of hours to protect the resources of this national treasure. The volunteers, along with other Park staff, have worked with care to ensure the Wilderness Act has meaning. ”
Natural conditions prevail in wilderness areas. Since the Wilderness designation, no further construction or development can take place. Motorized equipment is prohibited. All trail maintenance is done with hand tools.
“The Wilderness areas of Shenandoah National Park provide a counterbalance to the Skyline Drive,” continued Wade. “In a Park most famous for its scenic road, countless visitors appreciate the opportunity to experience places with the minimum of human intrusion.”
