tangled; as teams keep their lines taut and haul violently on one another. With knives and razor blades on the kites and glass coated lines, pandemonium reigns as the lines saw on another, as a hundred men try to cut down each other’s entries.
There are no winners or losers in this monumental contest. After a kite has taken to its dive, a special rescue squad rushes to recover every shredded scrap. Although many badly damaged kites are simply burned, those that represent first bom sons are presented to their families to be kept as mementos. Others, more successful in battle, are carefully stored to fight again the following year.
The son’s family must pay for the kite and refreshments, many saving money for years after their son is bom. Rules had to be made to impose restrictions on the festival because the kites became so large and lavish that it began to threaten the economy. Even today some make great sacrifices for this event, even if they can’t really afford to.
