U.S. 29 from the District of Columbia through Virginia to Greensboro, N.C., was identified in the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) of 1991 as one of 21 high-priority corridors of national significance.

Under the Act, long-range plans and feasibility studies are allowed, to be prepared and states are given priority to fund the construction of these corridors as well as to provide increased funding for segments of these corridors that have been identified for construction. r

The consulting firm will provide recommendations for converting the pilot U.S. 29 section to a limited-access facility.

Completion of study is expected in early 1995.
