Beef Department, who along with David Jones in Madison, chairman of the Dairy Beef Department, served as co-chairman of the Carcass Contest this year.
There were 27 carcasses entered in beef, 19 in dairy beef, 19 in swine, and 42 in sheep.
“The carcass contest is very educational for the 4-H exhibitors,” said Helen W. Smith, Extension Agent. “The exhibitors get the data on their animals including live grade, average daily gain, fat thickness, ribeye thickness, yield grade, marbling and carcass grade. This is all computed into a carcass index which results in the carcass placings.”
Placings from Rappahannock included for beef: fifth Scott Updike, 10th and 15th Mary Beth Williams, 11th Justin Updike, 13th and 19th Greg Williams, 17th Katie Updike, and 22nd Zack Corbin. ,
Zack Corbin placed sixth for swine.
For sheep: Katie Updike 8th, Greg Williams 10th and 18th, Scott Updike 11th and 13th, Mary Beth Williams 12th and 15th, Justin Updike 17th and 25th.
