It’s headline news when Mills Godwin, The Lion King of Virginia Republican politics, endorses Oliver North, the nominee of his own party.
That’s because the Godwin endorsement sends a signal to thousands of mainstream conservative Republican and independents that it’s all right to work for North’s election alongside the many thousands of Christian conservatives who support his candidacy.
Godwin, who has no use for independent Republican Marshall Coleman who is running, brushed aside his candidacy by referring to him sneeringly as a “token candidate.”
And that assessment may, indeed, be accurate, for if Coleman were to stand any chance, he would have to get the backing of many moderate to conservative Republicans and independents who consider themselves in the mainstream.
So far there has been pratically no indication that Coleman is picking up such support and the formation by Godwin and other heavy hitters of a Virginians for North Committee practically guarantees it won’t happen.
The ‘Virginians For’ label has been used over the years by the old Byrd element in state politics to indicate the support of the power structure that once ruled Virginia for a particular candidate.
