picture as well as in the artist’s approach to his subject and the picture’s composition. Why this picture? The gradations of gray, the play of light on material surfaces are suggestive, as is the brush work in an oriental ink painting. The stark difference between these two kinds of landscapes is that the painter chooses everything while the photographer has to make what is there.
Mr. Blundell shows us that natural Fairfax has many faces where beauty can be found in abandoned countenances. I was drawn to “Plunge Pool, Scott’s Run,” a place not far from where 1 used to live in McLean. It is good to know that among those stark and handsome rocks and in front of a wild spray, a bather could take a secluded and natural bath.
Bruce Blundell htts ingeniously ferreted out the secrets of a largely urbanized county that less than fifty years ago was a rural, farming community. He makes us wonder if we can hold on to what nature has endowed us with in Rappahannock.
