“We were on top of our game after one-half of an inning,” said Coach Hackney. “I couldn’t have expected any more from them. They were very impressive that first inning.”
What happened after that was no different from what the growing Panthers had been experiencing during the season. Willie was on the mound for the Panthers and he had some control problems. He got in trouble early as the Generals answered with four runs in the bottom half of the first. Stonewall scored four more in the second and the Panthers scored three in the third.
“We were still very much in the game,” said Coach Hackney, “but Stonewall was the best hitting team we’d seen this season. They continued to hit the ball hard and capitalize on Panther mistakes.”
For the Panthers Jeff Atkins was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and four stolen bases. Willie, Tommy, Jon Digges and Carlos each had two hits apiece as the Panthers pounded out 15 hits but fell short of a victory.
