office, Ms. Nowakoski, was at Mrs. Smith’s side, and they were doing CPR as a team. Mrs. Smith remained at the mouth, where she had started working, while Ms. Nowakoski did compression on the child’s chest. The school nurse, Caroline Eline, joined them and began checking the child’s pulse.
One minute passed, another and a third. No pulse. Over and over the nurse checked. Nothing.
Mrs. Smith and Ms. Nowakoski had an unspoken understanding. They would continue their work until the rescue squad arrived. They would not give up.
Four minutes after the call, Sheriff Gary Settle arrived with two CPR-trained deputies.
In the fourth or fifth minute — nobody was timing exactly how long — Mrs. Eline said: “She’s got a pulse!”
