There was a time, and it wasn’t so very long ago, when an icon was simply an icon, “a religious image typically painted on a small wooden panel.” Today the best-known icons are graphic symbols on a computer screen. The word promises to be the vogue word of 1996.
Knight-Ridder reports that the Jeep Wrangler is “an American icon revered around the world.” The Associated Press describes Wayne Gretzky as “the hocky icon who failed to win a Stanley Cup in Los Angeles.” With the rise of Pat Buchanan, said The Wall Street Journal, beloved icons have declined.
How do vogue words get to be vogue words? Eugene McCarthy, the poet-statesman, probably explained it when he compared political writers to crows on a power line.
