Jackson District School Board member Ron Makela said Saturday he was unaware of any controversy on Goals 2000 until after the fact. He noted that the actual document is about three inches thick with a lot of legal working and a copy is in Superintendent David Gangers office. Mr. Makela read a 20-page summary by the Council of Chief State School Officers, an organization in Washington, D.C. Mr. Makela said he welcomes comments from citizens.
Citizens, it is critical. If you care about your families and how your tax dollars are being spent, become involved. Mr. Makela says you may review reading textbooks in the Rappahannock County Elementary School and provide written comments by April 22. On sex ed, I understand the school follows state regulations with opt-out program-.
School Board meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month at 7;30 p.m. The Board of Supervisors meetings are held the first Monday. Since the agendas 'are not published in the paper call in advance to learn about agenda items. A preliminary School Board agenda is available the Friday before the meeting. Call 9878773.
We can no longer assume government knows what is best for us; we must take responsibility for our own lives. We were told condom distribution would decrease teen pregnancy, but it has only\ increased it. We must get back to traditional family values if we are to survive as a nation.

Editor ’s note: Mr. Makela said he was well aware of the controversy over Goals 2000, but his reading suggests the concern over “strings ” is overblown. The vote wap on a resolution to ask the state to apply for the funds. If that happens and there are funds available the Rappahannock school system may apply for a small portion of the funds. The school system ’s Family Life Education curriculum was developed by a large group of local citizens. It has an opt-out provision. Many issues were before the board last Tuesday. The newspaper report did not cover all of them.
