Rappahannock News Contributing Writer ' Psst. Want to hear a secret? Hardly anybody has yet stepped forward to compete for the $100 prize being offered to the person or group who picks up the most roadside trash between this Saturday and the following weekend, ending April 28.
This is not, of course, what the R'apipahannock League for Environmental Protection (RLEP) Envisioned when it offered the cash prize.
RLEP Treasurer Phil Irwin said his group hoped that civic groups, churches, scouts, and other residents would seize the prize as an excuse to get together and clean the roads they frequent. . . So far, Laurel Mills is the only place where the spirit of friendly competition seems to have taken hold. Anianda Stephens and Gary Light, who own the Laurel Mills Farm Bed and Breakfast, put a notice in the Laurel Mills Store earlier this week, asking their neighbors to join them at 9-a.m. Saturday to clean about 2 miles along Rt. 618 on either side of the store. . "“Driving around, I noticed that we have pretty good trash density along fhis stretch of road,” says Mr. Light. *‘l think we can fill a lot of bags in a short distance.”
