Twenty 10th graders from RCHS travelled to Washington, D C. last Thursday to attend the First DARE International Summit at the Grant Hyatt Washington.
[They were there with their DARE instructor, Capt. Jeff Brown of the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office, to show what a typical DARE class looks like. They held a 20 minute “class” in front of the people attending the summit. During the ’’class,” using DARE workbooks, they talked about types of alcoholic drinks, the effects alcohol has on people, and about the law pertaining to people under the age of 21. In the class they learned that .02 is the presumptive level for being under the influence for people under 21. Capt. Brown said that one beer, one drink, or one glass of wine would cause someone to have that level. • They also discussed how reactions and demeanor can change after having consumed alcohol. “In my class the true consequences are exposed, such as the long term effects '6r what happens if you violate the law,” said Capt.
