Seventy years ago the great Henry Fowler had some unkind things to say about vogue words: “Every now and then,” he writer, “a word emerges from obscurity, or even from nothing-’ ness or a merely potential and notactual existence, into sudden popular-' ity. It is often, but not necessarily, one! that by no means explains itself to the* average man, who has to find out ite meaning as best he can.” | I
In 1965 Fowler’s successor^ updated his entry under “Vogue! words” with such examples as ameni-! ty, factor, implement, impact, ambi-* ence and seminal. They noted the use* of “blueprint” for plan, “target” for objective and “ceiling” for limit.
Do these sound familiar? Some fad words never die. They seem never to fade away either.
