Neither the contract purchaser (DelMarva Construction) nor a representative from the U.S. Postal Service was present when the Planning Commission unanimously voted to recommend that the Board of Zoning appeals deny a special use permit for a new Amissville Post Office to be built on Route 645.
Mackie Lee Jenkins was present . with his wife and two children. He built on a lot across Route 645 from the proposed location for the post office, “and we’re against it,” he said. He said they put their savings into a house in Rappahannock County “to get away from Manassas” and they did not think they would be facing a commercial use so close to their home.
The county recently amended the zoning ordinance to allow post offices with a special use permit in rural residential zoning, which is the zoning on that part of Route 635.
