then Speaker' of the House of Representatives, Rep. Wolf does not believe Speaker Gingrich will prove a handicap to continued Republican control of the Congress.
He said that most voters are more interested in what their Congressman can do for them, and he sees his role as a Republican congressman who seeks to work with both parties and do what he can for his district as insulating him from voter backlash against the Republican Congress.
With Republicans in the majority, Rep. Wolf became head of the transportation subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee. Last year, he said, the transportation appropriation was approved early and the Department of Transportation was not part of the government shutdown. He said he also succeeded in getting the appropriation approved without the pork barrel highway “demonstration projects” that had in the past been part of the appropriation process under Democratic Party leadership.
This year his transportation appropriation passed the House on a 403 to 2 vote. He said he worked hard to get a bi-partisan consensus for the bill.
