Bear Killed
Virginia deer hunters killed 218,476 deer during the 1995 hunting season, according to figures released by the Virginia Game Commission. This was a record for the state.
In Rappahannock County 1,914 deer were killed, 1,079 bucks and 829 does, with another six of unknown sex. That means that 43 percent were does, slightly higher than the state average of 40 percent.
Rappahannock County was sixth highest in the state with 31 bears killed. Statewide 602 bear were killed, a 16 percent increase over the 1994 season.
The number of turkey killejd during the fall season was down 23.5 percent from last year, but the Game Commission said that was the result of a decision to shorten the fall season to increase the supply of turkey for future years. In the 1995 fall season 1 1,229 turkeys were killed, down from a record of 14,681 in 1994. In Rappahannock 48 were killed.
State game officials credit the longer archery and muzzleloader seasons for much of the increase in the number of dfcer killed.
