Two registered nurses on the staff at Hospice of the Rapidan have earned certification in the new hospice nursing specialty. They are patient family care coordinator Essie Rossi, R.N., of Fauquier County, and staff nurse Brenda Welch, R.N., of Viewtown.
“Hospice nursing is a unique interdisciplinary and holistic approach to patient care which deserves to be recognized as a specialized area of expertise,” said Patricia Tuffy, R.N., executive director of Hospice of the Rapidan. “Because certification can be a source of assurance to families considering hospice care, we encourage each of our nurses to test as soon as they become eligible. All of our staff are well qualified, and now over half of our registered nurses carry the certification.” A nurse must have at least 4,000 hours of full-time experience in hospice to be eligible to test for certification.
Hospice is currently recruiting volunteers for their free fall training program that begins in September. Last year 68 volunteers provided over 1,870 hours of service to the organization and its clients. To learn more, call Martha Sukites at 825-4840.
Judy Larkin was recently appointed to the position as director of social services for Hospice of the Rapidan. She will also serve as hospital/nursing home liason and assist with bereavement counseling.
