Besides choosing a President, vice president, U.S. Senator and 10th District member of the House of Representatives, voters in November will also be asked to vote on five amendments to the state constitution.
The subjects of these amendments range from allowing churches to be incorporated to victims’ rights, to separating the funds in the retirement system for state dnd local employees.
• The first question asks: “Shall the Constitution of Virginia be amended to provide that the funds of the government employees retirement system shall be trust funds and be invested and administered solely in the interests of the members and beneficiaries of the system?"
The state constitution currently requires that the General Assembly maintain a retirement system for state employees but does not require that funds be kept separate from other state revenues. Funds in the system are contributed by state and local governments for their employees and in some cases by the employees themselves. In Rappahannock County die state, county and school system pay the employees contribution.
The amendment would lead to legislation that would prohibit the state government from using the funds for any other purpose.
