In addition, a mandatory summer school plan should be provided for students who do not pass the fifthgrade predictor test and the sixthgrade LPT. finally, consideration must be given to making up snow days on Saturdays that immediately follow days missed, so that makeup days and learning take place before the testing, instead of after testing in the spring.
Student attendance also must be improved. New attendance regulations have been recently adopted to improve student attendance. New hiring procedures also have been recently implemented which better match school needs with new teacher candidates. Some of the changes have already been made, while others vyill require consideration before the School Board in coming months. In some cases the Board of Supervisors will have the responsibility to act on some of the changes as part of the 1997-98 budget.
The Rappahannock County public schools have a good educational program, but like all human efforts we can make improvements. Citizens in the county should always be vigilant and vocal and expect improvement from their schools. My interest in improving our schools is out of a desire to provide the best education for the children of our county. I am asking others with the same desire for their support. Those who are really concerned about our schools and want to build a better future for children can do so by becoming involved on a variety of advisory and parent boards within the school, or by volunteering and helping teachers or students directly.
