The agreement calls for DCR to continue operation of the Grist Mill while Mount Vernon rebuilds the millworks, restoring this recreation of the first president’s original mill to working order. The restoration will be financed using funds from 1992 general obligation bonds.'
Following completion of the renovations, Mount Vernon will take over all operations of the mill, located just three miles from Washington’s mansion. After a successful lease period, not to exceed five years, ownership of the property will be transferred to Mount Vernon. Ownership of the property would revert to the state if jit is ever closed to the general public. L
During the renovation period, both DCR and Mount Vemon will provide interpretive programs including costumed interpreters and docents. With the transfer of the deed they will also make capital improvements. Over the last several years, the mill , has been open only on weekends. Annual attendance at the mill has averaged 10,000 visitors per year while nearly one million people visit Mount Vemon.
George Washington’s Grist Mill Historical State Park was established in 1932 with the recreation of this mill. The mill sits on the site of the original.
