•The second ballot question asks: “Shall the Constitution of Virginia be amended to provide that the victims of crime shall be treated with fairness, dignity, and respect in the criminal justice process and that the General Assembly may define, by law, the rights of victims of crime?” ' Currently there is no mention of the rights of victims in the state constitution. If die amendment is approved the General Assembly might' adopt certain provisions, but it is not required to do so. Some protections that may be adopted include notifying victims when those charged are released on bail, the right of the victim to make a statement when the criminal is sentenced, notice to the'victim progress of die case, notice to the victim if the criminal is released or escapes and the right to confer with the prosecutor during the case. • The third proposed amendment asks: “Shall the Constitution of Virginia be amended to authorize the General Assembly to allow the Commonwealth the right of See Ballot, Page A-6
