.They remember a number of former teachers including Flint Hill’s Barbara Gentry who made many donations to Saturday’s flea market. Other teachers some of the former students remember are a Miss Tanner arid a Mrs. Doris Stickler from Front Royal.
Vlrs. Fox remembers that they had chapel every Friday and that each student had to recite a Bible verse. “Jesus wept” was a popular selection. She remembers that the upper grades attended every funeral at Willis Chapel.
Mr. Williams said he lived one mile from the school and walked. “We didn’t miss school because of a little snow,” he said. “If we got to school wet, we stayed wet all day,” he said, adding that those with wet clothes tried to dry out by the stove.
Mrs. Seal remembers oiling the floors and going to the mountains to collect wildflowers that filled two vases that sat on pedestals.
Mrs. Burke said her father rode his pony to school, and she hopes to find the hitching post he used and have it reinstalled.
