and landscape together. There are many animals, birds, flowers, pieces of jewelry, keys, stars, clouds and colorful skies. Perspective fascinates him as it did Renaissance artists.
“Conquest: Perspective and Reflection,” strongly architectural and with lots of reflecting water, is a disturbing picture, as any statement about the Spanish conquest of Mexico would have to be. Containing elements of the European culture Spanish conquerors brought to Hispanic America, the scene shows that the native art and identity have been overwhelmed but not extinguished. The longer I looked at it, the more interesting it became.
One of the show’s most attractive and absorbing paintings is “Caroline in the Ritz Studio,” a conventional portrait of the artist’s wife. Over and over, 1 was drawn by its composition and three dimensionality.
Several of the pictures I did not find successful. “Conferring with the Moon,” the work that gives the show its title, I found full of anomalies; the uninterestingly painted cupid, the stiff, partially concealed nude and what may be an architectural remnant on the left, all contributed to a confusing group of images for me.
Several paintings filled me with admiration for Mr. Ruffner’s technical skills, his appreciation for what paint can accomplish, and his portrayal of the world of his fantastic imagination.
Take a little time to test your reflexes by visiting this outstanding exhibition at the Middle Street Gallery between now and Sept. 22. The opening reception will be from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7.
