remedial instruction is $84,126. The loss of $ 126,227 represents a substantial decline in the investment to help maintain high scores. To sustain high scores we must do a better job of providing additional help to students who need it. Returning at least to prior levels of remedial funding would be a positive start to address higher achievement for all students.
Starting with this school year the State Department of Education has mandated a new curriculum in mathematics, English, social studies, and science (Standards of Learning or SOLs). All prior curriculum and SOLs are now obsolete. To insure that the new state program is carried out properly across each grade level, a local curriculum should be developed immediately. Our current budget plan phases in the curriculum writing over a six-year period, starting with mathematics. Consideration must be given to accelerating the curriculum-writing process.
