The “Smithsonian at Little Washington” series continues at 4 p.m, on Sunday, Nov. 17. In a departure from the standard concert format, and in anticipation of Fran/. Schubert’s 200th birthday (Jan. 31. 1997), Smithsonian Chamber Music Program Director Kenneth Slowik presents an in-depth look at one of Schubert's greatest masterpieces, the string quartet Death and the Maiden. In a slideillustrated discussion, Slowik traces the genesis and performance history of the work. The evening concludes with a rendition of Death and the Maiden by the Tawes Quartet, made up of scholarship students from the University of Maryland.
