After members of the audience tried to turn last Thursday's meeting of the Water and Sewer Authority into a repeat of the public hearing held Sept. 23, the members voted to raise Sperryville sewer rates by $7 per month per EDU.
Following that vote the audience members left vowing not to pay the higher bills.
The new rate will increase the bill on a residence to $28.50 per month, or $85.50 per quarter. The authority had advertised a $10 per month rate increase.
Members said it would require a $5.50 per month increase to close the operating deficit and pay off bonds for the surge tank. The rest is supposed to build up reserves in the WSA accounts to handle capital expenses needed to replace aging facilities and to handle increased state requirements, members said.
