Basketball, volleyball, track and cross country running, soccer and softball — this past weekend about 30 elementary school aged girls had an opportunity to try all these in an "All Girls Sports Clinic” organized by Kylene Wolfe as her Girl Scout Gold Award project.
She brought in coaches and highschool aged helpers to see that the younger girls had plenty of help and. encouragement as they learned some of the basics of each sport
Saturday morning Luther Stanley helped introduce basketball. Sarah and Alice Gentry along with Summer Alexander and Joy Best were there with Kylene to help out.
That afternoon Heidi Maeyer introduced volleyball. She emphasized that volleyball requires teamwork and had the girls practicing bumping the ball back and forth in pairs. Every pair got better as the practice continued.
"I wanted them to learn the basics, and I think they are," Kylene said. She said she also hoped to interest the girls in attending high school games.
Sunday morning David van de Graafif introduced the younger girls to cross country and track, but first he put emphasis on conditioning exercises explaining that there is basic aerobic conditioning and then there is "sport specific" conditioning.
