Grading the Candidates
Asked to grade the performance of President Clinton in his first term, these voters gave him passing but not outstanding grades. On an A to F scale, Ms. Davis awarded the president a "B". "I think he's done very well with what he has to work with," she said. "There has been a lot of infighting but I think he has accomplished a lot."
Mr. Shafftier gave the president a "C." "He hasn't really created a lot of problems or solved anything spectacular or noteworthy. He's middle of the road," he said.
Mr. White said these four years under Mr. Clinton have been "one of the most uneven terms in my memory." The president "stumbled badly” at first by focusing on "gays in the military" as his first major initiative, and in concocting a complex health-care plan that fell flat in Congress. "But he has learned from his mistakes" and learned "to cope rather well" with a Republican Congress, Mr. White said. "So I give him a 'D' for the first two years and a 'B' plus for the second two years."
As for Mr. Dole's long-running performance as lawmaker and Senate leader, these voters awarded him generally good grades. "I would give him an 'A' for consistency and longevity and doing the best for his country," commented Mrs. Rogers.
"I would give him an 'A' as a • Congressional leader and a 'D' as a presidential candidate,” said Mr. Ellis.
The candid discussion revealed underlying worries about both candidates that are causing some agonizing over how to vote.
For Mr. Clinton, the misgivings clearly relate to matters of -character and the still-unfolding investigations of matters ranging from his Arkansas financial dealings to be mysterious gunshot death, ruled a suicide, of his White House counsel, Vincent Foster.
