Last Thursday, Oct. 10, representatives from the Science Museum of Virginia came to Rappahannock County Elementary School and pre» sented the "Science By Van" program. . The day began with an all-school assembly that introduced the concept of static electricity to the students. The presenter used a 100,000-volt Van de Gjaaff generator to demonstrate a number of static electricity principles. The students watched as Eston Davis { had his hair stand on end while touching the Van de Graaff generator. . For the rest of the day students . either participated in workshops prej sented in their classrooms or toured i exhibits in the gymnasium. Instructors from the Science Museum visited 10 classrooms and taught 45 minute workshops. Students participated in workshops on solar energy, mirrors, forest ecosystems, dinosaurs and fosi sils and circuitry. The students who did not participate in the workshops went to the gymnasium to tour 30 stations that wpre set up on tables. The exhibits provided an opportunity for the students to experiment with scientific principles. The hands-on exhibits introduced the students to the human body, electricity and .magnetism, optics and mirrors, structures and lpgic games, and physics fundamentjd$.
