The girls had the opportunity to run . the cross country course.
April Parker was most interested in soccer. "That's my favorite sport,” she said, but she had enjoyed success on the cross country course. "That was fun. I was about the fifth one done, and I beat a lot of the counselors," she said.
Mr. van de Graaff introduced all the varied events that are a part of a track meet. He also told about the camaraderie of sports and told the younger girls that if they participate in sports, they will make new friends, .not only their teammates but players from competing teams also.
In the afternoon the girls tried soccer with Christy Sander. She took them through drills on trapping and passing the ball. "Start now learning to use both feet," she advised. She demonstrated using the inside and outside of the foot for passing and then showed how using the top of the foot with a locked ankle gives more power to the pass.
After the session she said some girls who had never played before "did teally great."
Then it was on to softball with Rhonda Jenkins • coaching and Sarah Gentry, Summer Alexander and Angie Atkins helping out.
Reflecting on the success of the weekend she said, "I think it would be good to have such programs for younger girls, and boys too, on a more regular basis."
