With election day just a few weeks ahead, it is encouraging to see political spirits high in Rappahannock County and in the 10th Congressional District. Political cynicism seems to have been set aside in this and surrounding communities, replaced by vigorous, bipartisan support for three outstanding candidates: our President, Bill Clinton; Mark Warner, candidate for U.S. Senate and for Bob Weinberg, candidate for Congress.
Americans are aware that President Clinton is willing to solve the challenges presented in governing this great and multi-cultural nation in shades of gray, instead of pronouncing simplistic solutions to complex problems in 30 second sound bites.
Mark Warner is finding support among voters who want a Senator to take Virginia into the next century with an understanding of the future, instead of being mired in Cold War, anachronistic politics. Although we Democrats respect the values of his opponent who took a stand against one ultra right wing arm of his party, we find that respect diminish when he votes issue by issue with another ultra right winger. John Warner's voting record, on which he proudly stands, corresponds with Jesse Helms's whose views are no different, just older, than Ollie North's.
Thus it is so with our House of Representatives. This year, our county and our congressional district have been distinguished by Bob Weinberg, our candidate for Congress. In this race, Bob, a come-from-bfehind candidate whose coffers have not been drenched with special interest millions, is likely to upset the incumbent.. Frank Wolf, who has stagnated in office for almost two decades, supports term limits, but omits himself from that tenet. When asked why he remains a candidate after promising to serve only six terms, he replies: "I changed my mind.” His word can't mean very much.
Bob's career in cutting edge law has positively impacted the lives of average citizens and his candidacy gives us the opportunity to elect a person to represent our diverse community.
Stale ideas offered by entrenched politicos are out of step with the political revolution sweeping this country. The Frank Wolf brand of politics-asusual has to go. It isn't just that Frank Wolf has been afraid to debate Bob Weinberg, he is afraid to be challenged
