Though he rates the president's job performance as fair — "he could have done a lot worse," is his faint praise — Mr. Shaffner leans toward voting for Mr. Dole, partly to express discontent. "It's about the only power Americans have — to vote out the incumbent," he said.
Those were among the highly diverse views of a small group of Rappahannock County registered voters who agreed to sit down with The Rappahannock News last week and share their thoughts about the election of 1996. The two-hour discussion at the county library on Oct. 7 was held to sample the opinions of Rappahannock voters on the candidates, the issues and the politics of the presidential contest.
