That brought a storm of publicity to the town, and the all-woman town council was featured in numerous publications. One referred to Washington, Virginia, as "She Town."
The town and all-woman council received more publicity when Mrs. Brown was selected to be a contestant on "The Big Surprise," a TV quiz show. She made it all the way to the final round before losing, but for that final round the entire council went to New York for the show.
The town had an income of about $1,800 per year derived from the ABC Board and a bank franchise tax and about $3,000 in savings.
Mrs. Brown said she believes it is important for women to be involved in local government, and she was delighted with the present appearance of the town.
