This is a system for the biological purification of waste water and sewage that uses no chemicals. In a greenhouse there is a two-stage anaerobic reactor connected to several open aerobic reactors that have plants and various small snails and shrimp in them. A clarifier is the next step in the process. Over a period of several days the waste goes through these steps and then into a constructed wetland. At this point it could be discharged into a stream or a leach field or recycled to flush more toilets or to water lawns.

Dr. Ives-Halperin, who has a PhD in biology, explained that there would be some minor odor, but that once the system was working, it would need very little maintenance. The major expense is the cost of someone to supervise the plant. There is little machinery. Heat that the sewerage creates would keep the building warm except during extremely cold weather, he said.

When the settling tank needs to be cleared out, the solids are applied to plants in the constructed wetlands.
