Deer Hunting
The season for hunting deer with rifles opened Monday and will continue through Jan. 4.
As usual this will be the cause of controversy in the county. Some, mostly newcomers to the county, view deer hunting as immoral. Other landowners are disturbed, not by the morality of hunting itself, but by the morality of some hunters who feel they have a right to cruise the roads shooting onto posted land and trespassing on any land they like.
Others who attempt to produce com, apples or vegetables on their land hope hunters are very successful indeed. Deer regularly damage the young tips of small apple trees, harvest the com just as it is ripening and reduce rows of crops in gardens to nubs. Some plant gardens joking that if the deer harvest the crops, they can at least harvest venison.
Old timers remember when deer were quite rare in the Virginia Piedmont. In those days hunting meant primarily squirrel, rabbit and fox hunting. The numbers of deer have increased dramatically, partly as a result of policies of reintroducing them to the area and partly as a result of changes in land use.
