Town Explores
Greenhouse

The Washington Town Waste Water Committee met last Thursday with John Ives-Halperin of Applied Environmental Technologies to leant about a system of treating sewage using greenhouses and artificial wetlands.
The meeting was a continuation of meetings the committee has had to learn about alternatives for sewage treatment. At the same time the committee has contracted to have a needs assessment done that will involve testing streams and ponds around town and interviews with town residents about the condition of their septic tanks and drainfields.
Dr. Ives-Halperin discussed what his firm calls "Living Machines," the firm's name for their systems which have been used in Frederick, Md, and for pretreatment of waste from chocolate manufacturing.
