Several of these systems have been constructed. Besides the one that treats part of the sewage in Frederick, Md., the firm has "Living Machines" designed for the M&M/Mars plants in Texas and Brazil, a brewery in California and Body Shop plants in Ontario, Canada, and in Great Britain.

The company created a system that processes 10,000 gallons a day for the Audubon Society at their visitor center in the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Florida. That system recycles 80 percent of the water and it takes four days to pass through the system. The Audubon Society is using part of the greenhouse for a visitor center.

In addition to treating town sewage the system could be designed to accept septage from tanks in the county, he said.

Dr. Ives-Halperin said he could not give an estimate of the size of plant needed for Washington without a needs assessment and preliminary engineering study that would cost the town $20,000. He said a turnkey operation of 50,000 gallons a day would cost about $750,000 and take six months to construct. This, presumably does not include the cost of the networks of pipes to bring the sewage to the plant.
