RSVP Volunteer Coordinator Jeanie McNear and Capt. Jeff Brown of the Sheriff’s Office attended the Triad Conference in Williamsburg recently.
The preliminary goal of Triad is to reduce the victimization of senior citizens, said Sheriff Gary Settle. He and ' Mrs. McNear had talked several times about getting Triad started in Rappahannock before she and Capt. Brown attended the conference. She describes Triad as police and volunteers in the community coming together to improve the lives of the elderly. She said that the volunteers would simply assist, not take over the role, of law enforcement. t
Senior citizens are the fastest growing segment of the population and victimization of them is a growing problem, said Mrs. McNear. Becoming aware of the problems can. help a lot.
Triad usually consists of a threeway effort by a sheriff, police chief and AARP or older/retired leadership in the area. In a small area like Rappahannock, there is not a separate police chief, so Sheriff Settle is the law enforcement person involved. Because Mrs. McNear is the volunteer coordinator of RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) in this county, she and senior volunteers will work with Sheriff Settle and other law enforcement officers to get Triad started herd. One of the goals of Triad will be to help reduce the incidents of fraud and, , * scams in the county which are often tar-' * geted toward senior citizens. This county has seen paving scams before, where part of the driveway is paved, money is ^collected, and then the truck leaves far more asphalt and never returns. Telemarketing fraud is also a big prob-, lem, not only with senior citizens. *
