Secondly, though one might assume there are items we could live without, it sure looks more like a “nofrills” budget to me, driven by many factors including the new state requirements for curriculum changes, new testing to go along with it and a promise to hold localities accountable for poor student performance. (Meanwhile, state funds continue on a declining trend!) Even without this “accountability to the state,” we should support bringing more teachers and aides into the schools, and other policies that focus on nurturing the interaction between teachers and students that results in learning.
