Wakefield Loses
to Notre Dame
The Wakefield, Country Day School Girl’s Soccer Team lost an evenly fought game last Tuesday afternoon against Notre Dame Academy in Middleburg 1-0. The game was the season opener for both teams. Both teams started off a bit hesitant, but after 15 minutes the actioti heated-up.
Bridget Hickson's penalty shot from 25 yards was deflected by the Notre Dame goaltender to Brittany Hammelman whose shot narrowly missed wide. Moments later, Kristin Hickson’s shot in traffic from twelve yards went wide. Notre Dame then started to dictate the play. Controlling the midfield, they pushed forward, but the WCDS defense held. Fullbacks Larissa Woloshyn and Lindsay Knight along with Bridget Hickson did not allow any close range shots on goaltender Erin Nilan who stood strong.
In the second half, WCDS started to spread the field and control the balk however Notre Dame also picked up its level of play. Neither team was able to establish an advantage or generate any scoring opportunities for the first 30 minutes of the second half. Notre Dame, however, finally broke the tie. Off a throw in, a Notre Dame forward raced forward and beat the Wakefield defense to the ball and chipped the ball to the left of the onrushing Nilan. Wakefield responded by pushing forward. Despite the ball control of both Hicksons and Hammelmau, the Owls did not threaten the rest of the game.
Despite the loss, first year coach Alex Hujik, was encouraged, “We haven’t had a lot of practice time this year and the girls are still getting used to each other’s style of play. I’m pleased with the fact that we spread the field in the second half and controlled the ball for periods of play. The veterans stepped up and played hard and I was pleasantly surprised with the play of the new girls..”
Wakefield’s next game is Tuesday, April 8, at Wakefield School of the Plains.
