Merit Finalist
Wakefield senior Scott Updike of Washington, Va. has been named a Finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program, based in part on his outstanding performance on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT). Having achieved semifinalist status this past fall. Scott’s current distinction places him in a group representing about half of one percent of U.S. high school graduating seniors.
“We are extremely proud of Scott, not only for this particular accomplishment, but also for the well rounded nature of his accomplishments. In addition to being a scholar, Scott is a gifted athlete, farmer, and leader. He plays varsity basketball and volleyball at Wakefield, raises prize winning cattle on his family’s farm in Rappahannock County, and, as president of Wakefield’s Upper School, has been an outstanding example of school and community leadership,” Headmaster Peter Quinn said. “The faculty joins me in heartily congratulating Scott on his latest honor.”
Out of 32,000 Virginia students who took the PSAT, Scott scored among the top 60 in the state. In order to advance to the finalist level, he had to meet additional requirements, including completing a detailed application, demonstrating an outstanding academic history, being recommended
