Her technique of painting with vinegaf paint is especially beautiful; in her home- she has a jelly cupboard painted to look like the front is punched tinwork. Vinegar painting is an old form of folk art painting which she believes originated in the 1700’s.
The glaze has to be just the right consistency to work with, said Mrs. Waite. While the paint is still wet on the object being painted, she uses different objects to make designs in the paint. These can be pieces of newspaper, clay, cheesecloth, plastic wrap or other items. There are different methods of mixing the vinegar paint. Some of the ingredients would include a powdered pigment, vinegar, Karo syrup, or even stale beer.
When the piece is finished, she uses oil-based polyurethane to give it a beautiful gloss.
Though Mrs. Waite wishes to concentrate now on doing murals, she will still paint pieces of furniture on a commission basis, either using a piece of furniture the client already has, or can furnish one.
She said it would be wonderful to walk into a room and have someone enjoy a painting on the wall.
