orchids: The elegant and intricate Yellow Ladyslipper and Showy Orchids. Both summon up all that the word orchid implies.
They are there for the viewing, a heart-stopping show at the end of a pleasant (hive. AT an altitude of over 2,000 feet, there is an extra thrill. We drove form the valley out of May and back in botanical time to April. It was a chance to have an extra sip of spring. The trees were just beginning to leaf our over the trilliums on one May trip; in Flint Hill they were almost completely formed.
It is due to the efforts of the Piedmont Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society that the 400 acres of the G. Richard Thompson Wildlife Management Area is free from clear cutting and the trails marked and maintained. I do most highly recommend this organization, join at a minimum fee, get the literature, and attend the lectures. On field trips you’ll meet interesting people who loved and know the natural world.
