paints. If painting metallic colors, though, she uses oil paints. Once the mural is painted, Mrs. Waite covers it with a satin finish polyurethane to protect it, and allow it to be washed when necessary.
On the murals in her mother’s kitchen, a lot of the painting is trompe l’oeil (painting which creates a strong illusion of reality) — there are tassels hanging from silk ropes, a striped curtain which is painted to look as if it is hanging over the edges of the window. She painted on the actual woodwork around the window to make it look as if the curtain was hanging down. It really is hard to tell if the curtain is real or not because it has so much depth to it. Mrs. Waite took a class in trompe 1-oeil last spring.
She also created different designs incorporating a leopard seated on a pedestal, and plans on returning to finish up with a monkey “stealing a bunch of grapes.” The tiger scroll design painted over the kitchen sink was taken from a fabric design.
“There are so many neat things you can do to a room to knock it up a couple of notches,” said Mrs. Waite. She thinks that painting murals in a child’s nursery would really be fun, as would a garden scene on a dining room wall. After doing her mother’s kitchen, she realized that there are
