After several months of discussion, a proposal and public hearing the Rappahannock Planning Commission approved changes it proposes to amend the zoning chapter of the county code pertaining to Bed and Breakfasts.
Phil Irwin, president of the Rappahannock Area Association of Bed and Breakfasts, said, “I have no objection to the definition of Bed and Breakfast however, I do object to putting impositions on the degree of hospitality a B&B can provide.”
He said food service is a very important part of a B&B’s total service. “I disagree with the concept of limiting it (the number of people who can be served at a meal). Nobody needs to police B&Bs. There is no history here of any B&B doing anything to harm public welfare. I think you should stay with the definition as it is.”
Marianne and Charles Wilson, who own Thistle Hill Bed & Breakfast said that they have struggled at great expense to make their B&B attractive, successful and well respected. They feel, as Mr. Irwin said, that the ordinance should be left as it is.
They also said B&Bs should be able to have events or weddings from! time to time if they desire to do so and if they are not allowed to the business would have to be sent to another county around us that could accommodate that type of event. They feel this is detrimental to the tourism business in the county.
County Administrator John McCarthy said there is a provision to deal with big events on a permit basis.
