In June, Headwaters, the Rappahannock County Public Education Foundation, presented its first mini-grants to two county teachers.
These grants were given in response to applications distributed to county teachers in the spring of 1997. After reviewing the six completed applications, Rappahannock County Elementary School sixth grade teacher Ed Rissler and kindergarten teacher Marty Cannon were awarded grants.
Mr. Rissler plans to use his grant to set up a recycling program this fall at RCES. There are four grades at the school that have specific standards of learning related to recycling. His program will give the children a chance to learn with actual hands-on experience.
This project will start with focusing on recycling aluminum cans. Initial start up costs, which mainly involve facilities for storage, are covered by the grant. Mr. Rissler expects the project to be selfsupporting, and possibly create a profit which could be used to purchase additional classroom science equipment.
