During the intense heat wave of mid-July, the T\ifted Titmouse calls incessantly, starting before sunrise and continuing right through until mid-day when the temperature is well into the ‘90s.
The two-syllable call commences again in the late afternoon and continues until darkness silences him. I wonder about this bird. Is he starting a second brood? Maybe it’s all just a restatement of territoriality and a calling together of the family. Several young ones have been visiting the feeder along with the now not-sosleek adults. Bird behavior is an endlessly fascinating study with many questions going unanswered.
Speaking of bird feeders. Readers plagued or blessed with squirrels, depending on the personal viewpoint, will find a recent booklet of interest. I did. Entitled: “Enjoying Squirrels More (Or Less),” it was published by the good folk who bring out the delightful and informative periodical, “Bird Watcher’s Digest” every other month.
